THE WHITE GOLD OF GREENLAND AVAILABLE ON SÁPMIFILM
Sapmifilm.com releases The White Gold of Greenland. The documentary is so controversial that the Editor in Chief of DR’s news department was fired after it was published. The film explores whether Greenland, or Kalaallit Nunaat, has always been an expence for Denmark or if it has actually also benefited Denmark. The film is now available to stream in Norway, Sweden, Finland, Canada and Germany through www.sapmifilm.com.
According to the film’s creators, Danish companies has had a turnover of what would be equivalent to 400 billion kroner today from extraction of the mineral cryolite in Greenland. Both Greenlandic and Faroese film communities criticize the documentary’s removal, arguing that the films does not have factual errors, but is unsure exactly how much Denmark has profited from mineral extraction.
– We are publishing the film because we want to showcase the Indigenous perspective. We have not independently analyzed the parts of the film that led DR to remove it from its platform, but we have watched it and believe others should have the opportunity to do the same. The filmmakers are reputable professionals, says Anne Lajla Utsi, managing director at The International Sami Film Insitute.
Greenland’s White Gold can be watched online via the Sapmifilm platform or the Sápmifilm app. Additionally, Sapmifilm has released nine other new films and now has over 180 features and short films available.
