About Molly of Denali

Molly of Denali is an American-Canadian animated television series created by Dorothea Gillim and Kathy Waugh and produced by Atomic Cartoons and WGBH Kids for PBS Kids (USA) and CBC Kids (Canada). The series premiered in 2019 and is the first nationally distributed children’s television series to feature an Alaska Native character as its lead.

The series follows Molly Mabray, a curious and resourceful Alaska Native girl living in the fictional village of Qyah, Alaska. Through everyday adventures with her friends and family, Molly explores the land, culture, and traditions around her, highlighting Indigenous knowledge and community values.

While Molly of Denali is produced as a television series, it will be presented in two special film versions for Sámi audiences. The north Sámi-language versions will be available on Sapmifilm following the festival screenings.

Molly of Denali is also a broader learning universe centred on Indigenous culture and everyday life, with the TV series supported by educational apps and learning activities. The series presents Indigenous content from Alaska Native perspectives and is developed with cultural consultation to support accurate representation across the many Alaska Native communities. The project is developed in collaboration with Alaska Native cultural advisors and includes Indigenous writers, actors, artists, and producers. Among the writers are, to name a few, Princess Daazhraii Johnson, Anna Hoover, Vera Starbard, X̱’unei Lance Twitchell, Dewey KK’Ołeyo Hoffman, Raye Lankford, Douglass Wood, and Peter Hirsch, and more.
