A Sámi Wedding Selected for Toronto International Film Festival

WORLD PREMIERES AT THE

TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

The drama series Heajastallan – A Sámi Wedding has been selected for the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) 2025.

The series is produced by Mer Film, Tordenfilm, and Forest People for NRK, and is the first drama series created by Åse Kathrin Vuolab.

I’m extraordinarily grateful that A SÁMI WEDDING has been selected for Toronto. I can’t wait to show an international audience the dysfunctional family that has been living inside my head since 2019. I hope that both the humor and darkness in the series will connect with the audience, says the series creator Åse Kathrin Vuolab.

The drama series will have its world premiere at TIFF in the Primetime section, which features the best of international series. The series will be broadcast on NRK in early 2026.

In the small Sámi town of Kautokeino, Garen is at the bottom of the social ladder. Trapped in a loveless marriage, she pours her energy into helping her unappreciative family. When her son is to marry into a wealthy reindeer-herding family, Garen sees a chance to lift her status by arranging the perfect wedding. Garen must recruit her siblings: the gay artist Henry who hates everything Sámi, the outspoken addict Belle and the village fuckboy Johan. The whole of Kautokeino watches while the dysfunctional siblings arrange a wedding in record time. What can go wrong? Spoiler: Everything!
