THE SÁMI YOUTH SERIES PREMIERES NOVEMBER 14.
The Sámi youth series, Oro jaska / Hold kjeft, is set to premiere on November 14 on NRK TV (the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation) and YLE (Finnish Broadcasting Company), and on SVT (The Swedish Televison). The six-episode series follows a group of friends in Kárášjohka after a rape, leaving deep scars.
The series was created by Silje Bürgin-Borch and Vegard Bjørsmo, who also established a writers’ room with several other writers, including Kathrine Nedrejord, Ole-Henrik Lifjell, Timimie Märak, Eila Muotka, and Kátjá Rávdná Broch Einebakken.
Kátjá Rávdná Broch Einebakken plays the lead role, and one of the series creators, Vegard Bjørsmo, also plays a central role. The series had a pre-premiere on November 7 in Kárášjohka, where it was filmed and where its story unfolds. Reflecting on the event, Bjørsmo shares his excitement about the successful pre-premiere at the Kárášjohka community center, where the audience was able to watch the first two episodes. Many had also contributed to the production in various roles. Vegard is especially proud of dedication shown by the writers’ room.
– I have been working a lot lately, so just now after the pre-premiere in Kárášjohka, I’ve finally had the time to reflect on the process we’ve been through. So many Sámi voices and artists have contributed in the writing of the series, and I am incredibly proud of how they’ve shared their experiences and helped shape what the reality of Sámi youth can look like. We’ve had the pleasure of working with talented Sámi writers like Kathrine Nedrejord, Ole-Henrik Lifjell, Timimie Märak, Eila Muotka, and Katjá Rávdná Broch Einebakken, says Vegard.
More Sámi series
– I hope that when young people watch this Sámi series, it can inspire and motivate them to pursue acting and spark an interest in creating new Sámi series, says Vegard.
Producer and creator Silje Bürgin-Borch is humbled to have been working within the writer’s room.
I am deeply humbled to have had the opportunity to work with such brave, young voices, and incredibly proud of them and the story they entrusted to Vegard and me, says Silje.
