Sámi cinema is flourishing, with more filmmakers and stories reaching new audiences. As it grows, it is essential that this development reflects the full diversity of Saepmie, ensuring visibility for filmmakers, languages and perspectives from the southern and smaller Sámi language communities.
At this edition of Sámi Films Rising, held during Raasten Rastah:filmh, we will highlight South Sámi and Pite Sámi stories. Audiences are invited to discover three upcoming projects that explore culture, identity, history and storytelling traditions from the southern parts of Sápmi, and to get to know the filmmakers behind them. The event offers a preview of the projects and the films will not be screened in full.
About the films
Saajve
An animated adventure film for the whole family.
Inspired by Sámi stories, worlds and beings, Saajve follows siblings Bräjta and Aanta on a mission to return a sacred figure to the magical parallel world of Saajve. They must succeed before the giant Staaloe destroys all the knowledge in the world.
Written and directed by Oskar Östergren Njajta, produced by Bautafilm in co-production with Krystallplaneten.
Bunk Bunk
A short film exploring grief, identity and belonging.
After her father’s death, Maren-Kristine returns home and inherits a bunker filled with traces of her family’s Pite Sámi heritage. Faced with grief, pregnancy and a cultural heritage shrouded in silence, she searches for a way forward.
Directed by Ane-Martha Tamnes Hansgård, produced by Mattima Films.
Bissegh – Sacred
A documentary about South Sámi knowledge and its transmission across generations.
Tom Kappfjell shares his knowledge of South Sámi sacred sites, offering traditions and a life closely connected to reindeer herding and nature. When the younger Ramona Kappfjell Sørfjell seeks him out, Bissegh – Sacred also becomes a story about how ancestral knowledge can be passed on to new generations.
A documentary by Tom Kappfjell, directed by Ulf Myrvold, produced by Viehkie, Alvelandet and Stoknes Future.
