Braunschweig International Film Festival: Sámi Cinema in focus

SÁMI CINEMA IN FOCUS IN BRAUNSCHWEIG

This year, the Braunschweig International Film Festival, held from November 11-17, 2024, will focus on Sámi Cinema with the special series “Sámi Cinema – Stories from the North“. The festival will feature a curated selection of 8 feature-length Sámi films and 5 Sámi short films.

– It is remarkable that the Braunschweig International Film Festival has chosen to spotlight Sámi cinema, presenting a range of films from classic works like Pathfinder to contemporary features by talented Sámi directors. We are so happy with our collaboration with Braunschweig International Film Festival, and can´t wait to showcase our amazing films to their audiences, says International Sami Film Institute managing Director Anne Lajla Utsi.

In main competition

Sara Margethe Oskal’s film Eallogierdu / Tundra Within Me (2023) is in the main competition program.

In addition, the festival will screen recent and classic works from well know Sámi filmmakers, including Biru Unjárga / My Father’s Daughter by Egil Pedersen (2024), Je’vida by Katja Gauriloff (2023), Máhccan / Homecoming (2023) and Eatnameamet (2021) by Suvi West, Ellos Eatnu – Let the River Flow by Ole Giæver (2023), Sameblod / Sami Blood by Amanda Kernell (2016), and the classic Ofelaš / Pathfinder by Nils Gaup (1987).

Short film section

In the short film selection, there are five Sámi films, including Bihttoš by Elle Máijá Tailfeathers, Áhkkuin by Sunná Nousuniemi & Tuomas Kumpulainen, Ruoktojohka / Home River by Kati Eriksen & Scott Thornton, Human Habitat by Flavia Devonas Hoffmann, and Ealát by Elle Márjá Eira.

About Braunschweig International Film Festival

Braunschweig film festival was held first time in 1987, and is in Braunschweig in Germany. The festival has over 20,000 visitors per year and is one of the biggest audience festivals in Northern Germany. Every year the festival have a highlighted section in the festival. This year the festival highlights Sami films and Sami film makers.
