SÁMI FILM FESTIVAL
IN PLASSJE/RØROS
During the Gïelevåhkoe weekend, the Raasteh Rastah film festival is held in Plassje/Røros on the Norwegian side of Sápmi. The festival screens the latest Sámi films from Friday, October 25, to Sunday, October 27.
There are plenty of weekend activities, including a film workshop, film breakfast, film screenings, and other activities. There will be a pree-screening of the fresh North Sámi dub of The Fox and the Hare / Rieban ja Njoammil gádjuba vuovddi for children and a sneak peek of the pilot of brand-new South Sami animation Saajven jïh elmien gaske.
The festival will show the latest feature films, including Biru Unjárga —Føkkings Nesseby, Je´vida, and Stolen, and the documentary One with the Whale. For the oldest, there will be delightful South sámi short film screenings and feel-good evenings on Friday and Saturday.
Meeting place
Nicklas Danielsen, one of the festival programmers and coordinators, is looking forward to the festival.
Raasten Rastah is important to the South Sámi community; it’s a meeting place for children, youth, and adults, with a variety of programs for everyone.
Film workshop for children
Danielsen is particularly looking forward to the children’s film workshop and what they will create this year.
The children spend two intense days making films, which are then shown at the festival. In the past, some of their films have even advanced to the UKM (Ungdommens Kulturmønstring), and they always have a great time.
In addition to the film workshop for children, three short films by Sámi high school students, in collaboration with Filmbussen Trøndelag, Gïelem nastedh, and HATSK, will be shown.
Feelgood evening
After the screenings, there will be a bar and feelgood both Friday and Saturday.
These are two new concepts we’re introducing: a feel-good evening on Friday, with old South Sami short films, and a storytelling night on Saturday.
This is the third time the Raasten Rastah Film Festival is being held. The first edition was in 2019, followed by 2022, and now in 2024. Prior to this, there were film screening days as part of the Raasten Rastah festival.
The International Sami Film Institute and Raasten Rastah have collaborated on parts of the program, and ISFI will also give a presentation on Friday.
