INDIGENOUS FILM CONFERENCE 2023 – RECONCILIATION AND NEW FUTURES

International Sámi Film Institute hosts the third Indigenous Film Conference in Guovdageaidnu, Sápmi/Norway, from the 18th to 20th of August 2023. The theme of this year’s conference is reconciliation and new futures.

We invite people from the National and International Film Industry, Cultural Policymakers and stakeholders for a three-day conference focusing on Indigenous storytelling and film, XR technology and future scenarios for the Sámi Film Industry.

What does the future hold for the Sámi film industry?

This summer, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in Norway, will release its report and the results of the five-year survey and investigation of the consequences of the assimilation policy toward the Sámi people in Norway will become visible to the public. Following the report’s release, the Sami community is expected to participate in a reconciliation process.

However, reconciliation requires equality and real development opportunities. Therefore, it is necessary to discuss what is needed to give the Sami film industry greater self-determination and real opportunities for development on its own terms. At the same time, we want to look forward to new realities, new technologies, and new opportunities. What might the future of Sápmi look like?

PROGRAM

Through a broad and internationally oriented policy day, we want to illuminate and discuss the concept of reconciliation and examine the role film, and digital art can play in a possible reconciliation process. The second day of the conference is a full-day future workshop on XR technology, Indigenous storytelling and future scenarios.

TRAVEL TO GUOVDAGEAIDNU

Guovdageaidnu, or Kautokeino in Norwegian, is in the middle of the Arctic tundra. The nearest airport is Alta Airport (ALF), a two-hour drive from Guovdageaidnu. You can take the local bus from Alta Airport to Guovdageaidnu. We will also arrange a bus from Alta Airport to Guovdageaidnu on the evening of the 17th of August. And a bus to the Alta Airport from Guovdageaidnu on Sunday 20th of August.

ACCOMMODATION

We have reserved some rooms at Thon Hotel Kautokeino that you can book through the registration link. The price is 1495 NOK per night. For a double room, there is an extra fee of 300 NOK per night.
