SÁMI FILMS AT TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL & THE MARKET 2026

MÁTTÁRÁHKKÁ, SAAJVE AND PORSLIN AT TIFF: THE MARKET

The International Sámi Film Institute, in collaboration with the Indigenous Cinema Alliance (ICA), is bringing three Sámi projects Saajve, Máttáráhkká and Porslin, together with one ICA Fellow to TIFF: The Market, the first edition of the Toronto International Film Festival’s new film, series and innovation market, 10–16 September 2026.
The three projects are looking for co-producers, festivals or distribution partners. All are presented at the Indigenous Cinema Alliance market stand, with the opportunity to pitch at the ICA Industry Day on Friday 11 September.
Sámi cinema will also be represented in TIFF’s official festival program. Amanda Kernell’s Brace Your Heart / Garrat du váimmu will have its world premiere at Platform, TIFF’s juried competition.

AT TIFF:THE MARKET
SAAJVE

An animated family adventure inspired by Sámi folktales and magical realms. The siblings Bräjta and Aanta must return a sacred figure to the parallel world of Saajve, to stop the giant Staaloe from destroying all the world’s knowledge.

Saved from his dying mother’s womb, a young man grows up fascinated by near-death experiences and their promise of light and unity. Lost in life, he returns to his Indigenous grandmother to learn about his mother, only to discover they shared the same longing.
Porslin is Ann Holmgren’s feature debut.

Máret, a rebellious actress, tries to escape from her Arctic homeland, but when a passionate romance awakens her hidden powers, she rises to fight the patriarchy with love.
In addition to the three projects, ISFI brings a Sámi ICA Fellow to Toronto: producer Anna Sunna, who comes to the market with the feature documentary Stolen Memories. Read more about the Fellow here.

BRACE YOUR HEART Selected for TIFF’s Platform 2026

Brace Your Heart has its world premiere on 15 September. In a remote Sámi village, 20-year-old Ejva inherits her late father’s reindeer herd. When she falls in love for the first time, the local leader Heaika reacts in a way that leaves her with a condition threatening her ability to care for the herd, and Ejva must reclaim control of her own life.
Brace Your Heart is the only Sámi title in TIFF’s official selection this year, and is supported by the International Sámi Film Institute.
